Pop music is the term used to identify commercially recorded music, usually for the youth market, although a
“boomers” music market is growing. The music is usually related to love, relationship problems, angst and anger.
Over the years new technology has changed the sounds and the abilities of a group of people to rapidly become the
next big sound.

Surprisingly there are still artists from the 60’s and 70’s that can feel a massive arena within days of their
tickets going on sale. Artists such as Elton John, Madonna, The Stones, Cliff Richard and Status Quo are still
rocking after all these years. The boy bands and girl bands and one hit wonders that have followed them are all
gone and lost in memories – their songs remaindered on the web sites and in the music stores.
Now it is much easier to become “famous” but much harder to remain producing tracks that sell.
Artists and bands come and go very quickly now but some hold on. Will the likes of Justin Beiber the young man
who rose to fame after his singing was posted on a social site ever be as famous and long lasting as his names
sake Justin Timberlake. The later paid his dues as a young man on TV, went on to record numerous songs and now
seems to be working mainly in film. Will Lady Gaga, the theatrical dance pop singer, ever be as long lasting as
Whitney Houstan who also dabbled in film and dancing?
One of those that does seem to be staying is Beyoncé, one of the most recognisable singers of
modern-day R&B. She first rose to fame as the siren-voiced centre piece of Destiny's Child but will she ever
be as memorable and long lasting as Tina Turner who had a similar start in show business? Tina started as a duo
then went on to sing her own brand of blues, rock and roll and just plain belted out songs.
Nowadays social networking sites such as MySpace and TV programmes such as “Britain’s Got Talent”
are churning out “stars” that find an easy but fickle market. Festivals allow music followers to see and hear
numerous groups all at once in pleasant surrounds. The internet allows for the downloading of songs and albums
very easily and cheaply. Will there always be a constant stream of new talent to fill this demand? Yes I think
there will be – but in the meantime to fill a concert hall takes real talent and at the moment you have to be
big, established and well liked to do that.
